Lock down to me has resulted in alot of trawling through dusty boxes. Kinda fun for the Nostalgia but also cringe.
This Find was gold though!
My older brother received this cassette off a lad on his course in art college around 95/96 i think.
I was a tad too off kilter for him and was passed next door to me.
On first listen through it derailed my understanding of punk or American hardcore at the time.
I wasn't not hearing Green day / Beastie Boys / Misfits / Sex Pistols... This was an odd sound.
I was intrigued but concluded i wasnt ready for this yet.
Into a box it went and has touched a tape deck since today!
Looking at in now, im familiar with several of these band.
One of the Last LPs i bought before The lock down is by a band on this tape. ( Nation of Ulyesses)
Ive been good friends with one of the member of these band for many years ( Des Man Deablo )
and to cap of the full circle..
I reached out to the composer of the tape and in our conversation he started sending pics from old gigs he's attended one of which was at The Den' in Wigan.
That same day Coughin Vicars were meant to playing the Reopening of the now legendary The Den
( Earth day 2020 ).
10 years Cold Ones made it to Portugal for short tour with Mr Miyagi. It was an incredible two weeks and deffo a highlight of the bands years together.
JADE HAIRPINS Played their first gig in Liverpool in The Kaz Stockroom in Valentines night 2020.
Two members of the band also play in Toronto's Fucked Up who's U.K live debut also happen to be in Liverpool. I arrived with a JD sports Bag t-shirt id printed for them, it rained, everyone had enjoyable night, we got coffee in the morning.
The storm cleared, they moved onto their next gig in sheffield and weeks later the world went in to crisis.
JADE HAIRPINS / Harmony Avenue - Merge records
Turns out i had several friends in common with their drummer Tasmin. She skates, used to work in Slam and also play loadsa cool bands including ES.
ES / Less of Everything - Upset the Rhythm Records
Nation Unrest were meant to play but half of them were sick. I befriended the other half of the band named Cal who had jumped in the van for giggles. He was originally from Blackpool but now lived in London. I could sense he had a mad dog streak in him but the gummy's he'd been puffin on tonight hashed his mellow..
Weeks later i heard his other band and the 'Aggy i sensed made sense..
THE CHISEL / Deconstructive Surgery - La Vida Es Un Mus Records
Spawned from a fanzine and now defacing any offer that arrives.
